Magnesium and Vitamin D Side Effects
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi Laura,

Based on your symptoms, I would still highly suspect that you are magnesium deficient. Take a look at my pages on:

Causes of Heart Palpitations

Causes of Muscle Cramps

People with magnesium deficiency may need LARGE amounts of magnesium. Dr. Carolyn Dean, author of The Magnesium Miracle, takes 4 doses of Angstrom Magnesium, which she says is about 2800 mg of elemental magnesium- and she FEELS it if she takes less than that.

While I can't advise you on whether or not you SHOULD take magnesium due to your kidney issues, I CAN say that you have many of the Signs of Magnesium Deficiency.

You COULD take magnesium and get a couple of
RBC Magnesium Blood Tests
to make sure that you have not taken too much.

But the problem with taking magnesium when you have kidney issues is NOT that it is 'hard on the kidneys' or damaging to them, but only that you can end up building up too much magnesium if you are not able to get rid of the excess, and you can overdose. Magnesium Overdose is a serious issue that can cause electrolyte disturbances and even death, and so should not be messed around with. But if you have a normal BUN and Creatinine, this should not be a problem at all. HOWEVER, it's always a good idea to have the cooperation of your nephrologist.

Unfortunately, you are in a bit of a quandary and I don't have a good answer for you.

horrible side effects from vit d
by: wanda

I just finished reading the posting of the lady that described having the horrible Side Effects of Vitamin D, I have exactly the same problems, except for the fact the only has one functioning kidney, our stories are almost identical.

I have tried everything to get my Vitamin D levels up , but I have such horrible side-effects that I am forced to stop it. I have ever tried rubbing Vitamin D oil on my skin, but it still makes me sick..

About a year ago, my Vitamin D Level came back with a level of 14, now, it is a 4.. I am under the care of am endocrinologist, a neurologist, and a GP, so far they can not give me answers, yet all agree my levels are severely low.

I have had so many tests this past year, too numerous to even mention, but like the poster here, it does not seem to bother me to sit in the sun and last summer, I was able to raise my vitamin D levels to 24 by spending about 30 minutes a day in the sun, but I can only do this for about 4 months of the year,,Just wanted to give my experience with Vitamin D intolerance too...

Thyroid

You may also want to have your thyroid levels checked. I had my thyroid removed a couple years ago and was having the same symptoms.

Mee Too . .

Hi Laura and others,
I am the same when it comes to the D3 headaches and the resulting problems everyone has described. I am inclined to think that it is from the source from which D3 comes from which is chalcerferol (spelling may be wrong). It seems to me there is another kind of D that comes from natural foods we humans ingest. fish oil/D3.
calcerferol D3 is extracted from sheep wool. I've never eaten mutton, sheep or lamb and I don't know if it has the same D3 as it's wool does. Anyways, I can certainly say without going to a doctor that I must be Magnesium Deficient and I know I could do with more of both.

My suggestion then is to research the D3 source, eat more Vitamin D Foods , take Transdermal Magnesium Gel through the skin, eat magnesium rich foods (beans, brown rice, and brazil nuts, I think avocado too) and get as much sunlight as possible. Drink sparkling mineral water for the natural oxygen and mineral content (the oxygen is great! :) Those electrolyte fizzes are wonderful too.
Good luck!
Mari

Side Effects
by: Kerri Knox, RN

I highly suggest that you all read my page on Vitamin D Side Effects, since these problems are all signs that you have serious nutritional deficiencies of the Vitamin D Cofactors of Vitamin A, Magnesium and Vitamin K.

I cover some of these issues on the Vitamin D Side Effects page above and the Magnesium and Vitamin D page. Part of the problem is that everything who needs vitamin d ends up taking 'just' vitamin d without any of the necessary cofactors required for it's absorption and conversion into its active form. Nutrients are not drugs, and do not act in a vacuum. They require other nutrients and enzymes to be processed in the body. This is why I always recommend that everyone taking vitamin d get the full Vitamin D Absorption Pack as 'insurance' against any nutrient deficiencies that might be causing problems.

And it's true that many Vitamin D's have rancid oils, and that vitamin D2 should not be taken at all. These also cause problems. Getting the absorption pack solves all of the complex vitamin d issues for you.

Searching for help

I have the same symptoms except add mild vertigo and pain on left side of my head..Im also super sensitive to light...this happens with vita d and all vitamins and some supplements..I’m at my wits end as now I can’t even tolerate the sun without headaches. I don’t know what to do now. My vita d levels are very low and I’m feeling it in achy tired out bones. I can’t stand for too long before I start to ache. I’m afraid of what’s going to happen to me if it keeps up. Doctor, internalist, neurologists and homepathic doctor all have no idea why I’m so sensitive now to all these supplements..I’ve even had a cat scan and it was fine...I’ve even tried food grade vitamin d and still get the symptoms after few days..I’m pretty much fine if I avoid it but I can’t keep doing that..I don’t want to end up in a wheelchair or worse...really wish I could find a solution :(
