H Pylori and Stomach Cancer

by Steve
(Adelaide)

I have just started a course of antibiotics to get rid of HPylori. It was diagnosed after I suffered months of severe indigestion. I am currently taking a months supply of Lansoprazole. My doctor has told me to take the Lansoprazole and the antibiotics and once I run out stop taking them and see if the heartburn returns.

He said to see him if it does. After reading up I am now worried about cancer, should I be checked even if my heartburn does not return???

Thanks

It's a risk factor, just get rid of it

Hi Steve,

H pylori is a 'risk factor' for cancer, but stomach cancer is pretty rare and something like half the world's population has H pylori. So, if you want to 'worry' about cancers, then 'worry' about colon cancer and get off of processed foods, gluten and other 'crap' that your body treats as toxic. By doing this, you will decrease your risk of 'all' cancers and you'll be less worried about getting anything, from getting H pylori again, to getting cancer to getting colds.

The 'best' that you can do to reduce your risk of stomach cancer is to first get rid of your H pylori, then make sure that you get retested in a month or two with an H Pylori Stool Test. Do NOT get a blood test within several months as it will not be accurate and you'll almost certainly test positive, then you'll get a lame response from your doctor saying something like 'Well, you'll always test positive once you've had H pylori' which is patently untrue. It's just that you might test positive in a BLOOD TEST, which is why you need to get a stool test to make sure it's gone.

However, H Pylori Eradication fails about one-third of the time, and so you MUST get rechecked after your treatment to make sure that it actually worked since it often doesn't.
