Do we really need calcium for bone health?

by Joe
(Herndon, VA)

In my research, albeit very limited, I've seen no definitive study that links the consumption of dairy products to reduced osteoporosis. Yet we are constantly told we must eat more calcium-rich dairy products.

Is this just a ploy by the American Dairy Counsel to get us to buy and eat more of their products? Where is the logic behind eating dairy products? Do cows continue to eat dairy products after they are weened? I think not.

All they eat is grass. How are their bones doing? Maybe they get enough calcium from the grass? Maybe eating calcium isn't what creates strong bones, just like eating cholesterol doesn't make your cholesterol rise, and eating brains won't make you smarter!

Man has been on this earth for millions of years. We've only been consuming dairy products for the last hundred or so. There are still cultures who do not.

What's your opinion on this?

Hi Joe,

That's a GREAT question. Yes, I think that the Dairy Council is just trying to pull the wool over our eyes. Many studies (that don't get out to the public) show that the higher the milk intake, the more osteoporosis a country has.

More About Vitamin D

One VERY well-studied area with virtually no osteoporosis is the island of Okinawa off of Japan where some of the most well studied longest lived people live. Their milk intake is virtually ZERO, yet they have almost no osteoporosis.

In my opinion, most of us actually get enough calcium in our diets, but we:

1) Get too much phosphorous (sodas and milk) and that inhibits calcium absorption

2) Are magnesium deficient which prevents the calcium from going into SOLUTION in the blood. The calcium remains crystallized and simply gets excreted

3) Don't get enough Vitamin D. And 20 times more calcium is absorbed when you have sufficient Vitamin D

So, while we DO need calcium, we don't necessarily need calcium SUPPLEMENTS. We would have much less osteoporosis if we got enough calcium and vitamin d and stopped eating junk food and sodas.

We do not NEED dairy products in any form. We did fine for centuries without them. However, some cultures DO thrive on them- when they are in their RAW state. Remember that the modern day 'discovery' of cultured dairy products made the news precisely because the Russians who drank large quantities of cultured milk products were extremely long-lived and healthy.

Culturing Raw Milk to Make Kefir is an extremely healthy way to get dairy products and certainly seems to offset some of the detrimental effects of dairy- and it's tasty too.

Also funny that you asked..
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi Again,

It's also funny that you asked when you did because right above your question in my inbox is an article from Dr. Garry Gordon, the founder and creator of the Longevity Plus Products that I carry exclusively in my Product Store on just that subject.

Dr. Gordon says,

"I have worked diligently for over 35 years to spread the word about how to have
soft arteries and hard bones when you are 90. Clearly if you have heard me, you
know I fear calcium supplementation unless it is controlled by equal levels of
magnesium. After all when you are 85 you will on average have 140 times too much
calcium in your aorta! I can help that today with Vitamin K-2, which is why I
want you on Longevity Plus? Beyond Bone Defense product every day of your life.

But that still does not tell you when you can tell people that part of their
joint problems could be partially due to taking too much calcium, as it relates
to the condition that is widely under diagnosed called PSEUDOGOUT. Now you can
correct all the amateurs who sell everyone on huge quantities of calcium
supplements never dreaming of the possible harm.
"

Interesting, huh? Dr. Gordon is 72 years old and still lectures, teaches, researches, writes and treats patients extensively, so he knows what he is talking about.
