Do we really need calcium for bone health?

In my research, albeit very limited, I've seen no definitive study that links the consumption of dairy products to reduced osteoporosis. Yet we are constantly told we must eat more calcium-rich dairy products.
Is this just a ploy by the American Dairy Counsel to get us to buy and eat more of their products? Where is the logic behind eating dairy products? Do cows continue to eat dairy products after they are weened? I think not.
All they eat is grass. How are their bones doing? Maybe they get enough calcium from the grass? Maybe eating calcium isn't what creates strong bones, just like eating cholesterol doesn't make your cholesterol rise, and eating brains won't make you smarter!
Man has been on this earth for millions of years. We've only been consuming dairy products for the last hundred or so. There are still cultures who do not.
What's your opinion on this?
