Diagnosing Fibromyalgia is Easy
But Shouldn't Finding a Solution
Be the Goal?

In Diagnosing Fibromyalgia doctors have to decide that there is nothing seriously wrong. After that, there is a mechanical way of pressing on a specific set of painful spots on the body to determine if they cause pain.

Part of making sure that nothing else is wrong is testing blood, doing scans and other in-depth medical testing. Some of these will include tests such as:

  • CT Scans
  • MRI's
  • Electromyelograms
  • Muscle Biopsies

And other tests that are designed to make sure that there is nothing seriously wrong. But in those that eventually get a Fibromyalgia diagnosis, it comes down to finding nothing seriously wrong and then pushing on these Fibromyalgia Trigger Points and eliciting pain.

Some doctors will give the diagnosis of Fibromyalgia based on this information, but they are often VERY wrong and misdiagnose fibromyalgia quite often. In fact, one study found that 35% of patients with a Fibromyalgia Diagnosis who were referred to a rheumatologist had other problems that were NOT fibromyalgia.

"It is possible that a primary diagnosis of FM
is being made too freely, without consideration of other
diagnoses, in the setting of ill-defined musculoskeletal pain."

The Overdiagnosis of Fibromyalgia Syndrome

These patients ended up getting other medical diagnoses such as the inflammatory joint diseases of spondyloarthropathy and polymyalgia rheumatic. These didn't even include those with any other Causes of Fibromyalgia that we'll talk about in a few moments that few doctors even LOOK for!

In truth, 100% of people with a diagnosis of Fibromyalgia are Misdiagnosed!!

Take that in for a moment. If you have been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, you HAVE been misdiagnosed because Fibromyalgia is NOT a disease, it is a SYMPTOM of an underlying problem that doctors just haven't looked hard enough to find.

How are Doctors
Diagnosing Fibromyalgia?

Doctors usually go about diagnosing fibromyalgia based on the fact that it is NOT something else. They don't look FOR fibromyalgia, they look for NOT Fibromyalgia and when they don't find something else, then they tell you that you DO have fibromyalgia.

The problem with this is that it implies that what they are looking for is the only thing that your Fibromyalgia could possibly be and that they are using the most up to date and accurate assessments to find out what you DON'T have, but that is not true at all. Doctors who are not Understanding Blood Test Results almost always use completely INACCURATE laboratory tests that they SHOULDN'T be using. Then they often DON'T do accurate and useful laboratory testing that CANindicate serious problems that 'Look' EXACTLY like fibromyalgia!!

Take a look at the Understanding Blood Test Results to learn more about YOUR lab tests so that YOUR doctors don't make the same mistakes.

Symptoms of Fibromyalgia, but that are not even CONSIDERED when Diagnosing Fibromyalgia?

  • Osteomalacia- read more about how osteomalacia is misdiagnosed as Fibromyalgia on the Fibromyalgia and Vitamin D page
  • Latent Tetany Syndrome- a manifestation of severe magnesium deficiency. Read more about how Latent Tetany syndrome is mistaken for Fibromyalgia on the Fibromyalgia and Magnesium page
  • Myoadenylate Deaminase Deficiency- a genetic muscle problem that is often mistaken for Fibromyalgia and is treated with a substance called D-Ribose. Read more on the Ribose and Fibromyalgia page.

"When rheumatologists first became interested
in people with these symptoms [Fibromyalgia],
they were not able to explain what caused
the disorder, but they created
diagnostic criteria to define it. That became
a kind of medical kiss of death."

Dr. John Sarno from
'The Divided Mind'

And these are only a FEW of the things that doctors DON'T look for or use the wrong testing for when Diagnosing Fibromyalgia. When a doctor overlooks even ONE of these problems in favor of a fibromyalgia diagnosis on even ONE person, it means that person now is relegated to suffering with lifelong incurable chronic pain that few other doctors will look more deeply to find a solution to. Please learn more about these misdiagnosed problems and don't let your doctor diagnosing fibromyalgia keep you from finding an effective solution to your symptoms.
