Celiac is NOT an allergy...
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi Lisa,

Gosh, what a tough situation! First of all, celiac is NOT an allergy, it is an autoimmune disease! When the undigested gluten sticks to the digestive tract, then the body attacks the wheat - and your daughter's intestinal tract that it is attached to.

And you will NOT test positive on a celiac test unless she is gluten free, which- in my opinion- would be unethical to subject your daughter to simply in order to have a diagnosis. So, it's likely that you are never going to be able to 'prove' it.

So, it also sounds like there are some 'issues' with dad, and at this point, this same issue is going to come up at sleepovers, on trips to the movies with friends, etc. and so it's time that your daughter starts being coached to speak up for herself. Maybe her dad won't believe YOU but if his daughter teaches him about her problems, bringing along some research and literature and explaining how sick she gets and why, then I bet he will pitch in to help.

But she's going to need to do this many, many times in her life and she's got to start sometime. There are actually Celiac Groups that can help you to teach her how to talk to people about her food issues.

Next, it sounds like she's getting worsening Leaky Gut Syndrome or its simply never fully healed and she's starting to pay the price.

So, there are some causes of this and some solutions. If you are like most parents, you want her to eat as closely as possible to a 'normal' diet, with gluten free breakfast cereals and breads. This is a big mistake as these are all processed junk foods that are 'inflammatory' and will contribute to leaky gut syndrome.

If she is going to heal, she's GOT to:

1) Get on an anti-inflammatory diet without processed foods, sugar, etc.

2) Get her vitamin D level checked and get it within the Normal Vitamin D Level range

There are also specific supplements that you can use to help heal her digestive tract.
