Too Cautious
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi Lorri,

You are being FAR FAR too cautious in your taking of supplements and worrying FAR too much about the interactions and side effects. Do you worry about the interaction of butter and bread when you eat them? These have complex interactions and nutrients in them too, but the vast majority of people can eat butter and bread together without worrying about the vast array of potential but extremely rare problems that could occur. But I'll bet that if you look around the internet, there are LOTS of people that can't eat butter and bread together.

It's the same with supplementation. The VAST majority of people are going to take supplements together without any problems. Think about it, we're designed to get a whole range of nutrients in one meal, but we don't constantly worry about the interactions of those nutrients do we. Nutrients are NOT DRUGS!! Our bodies are supposed to have nutrients and we are supposed to get them together in combination with each other.

So, as far as vitamin d, why are you 'investigating' taking a vitamin d supplement and 'thinking of' starting at 2000 IU's per day. You need to start with a Vitamin D LEVEL and follow the instructions on my Vitamin D Therapy page to get your levels up to the proper range.

If you start with 2000 IU's, I GUARANTEE that you are going to remain severely deficient and you'll simply stop taking it because it's not going to help you. But it's not going to be because vitamin d doesn't help you, it'll be because you will be taking a quarter or even a tenth of the dose that you might need to bring your level up to optimal!!

2000 IU's is a MAINTENANCE dose for a 25 pound child!!

Next, as far as magnesium, I've dedicated an entire page to outline step-by-step how to know how much magnesium to take. Please read my page on Magnesium Dosage and follow the instructions there...

Again, do NOT just 'start supplementing' with vitamin d. GET A LEVEL!!! It's not that you risk taking too much if you don't get a level, it's that I guarantee that you are not going to be getting NEARLY enough!
