Heart Palpitations ARE
Symptoms of Vitamin D Deficiency

by: Kerri Knox- The Immune Queen

Yes, one of the Causes of Heart Palpitations can be Vitamin D deficiency. A severe Vitamin D deficiency can cause hypocalcemia- a too low amount of Calcium in the blood.

Calcium is a requirement for the proper electrical functioning of the heart- and a too low Blood Calcium Level can definitely cause Heart Palpitations.

However, there are MANY reasons why you would have heart palpitations- Vitamin D deficiency being only one of them.

If you ARE having heart palpitations, you should get a full cardiac workup- including a Vitamin D Serum Test and a calcium level as well.

While Heart Palpitations COULD be a symptom of vitamin D deficiency, it's not the most likely cause of your heart problems- although it could be contributing to it.

If you get a full workup and there does not seem to be anything wrong with your heart, then your heart palpitations could be a Sign of Magnesium Deficiency- even if your Magnesium Level is perfectly normal!

You may want to consider taking a High Quality Multivitamin with 500 mg of Magnesium and downloading the book Magnesium The Ultimate Heart MedicineIt will really open your eyes to the fact that you just might have a severe magnesium deficiency!

Every Time I take Magnesium I Get Spasms
by: Christina

Hi,
My naturopath recently put me on a high dose of magnesium - not having assessed my levels - and I had incredible eye twitching. She told me to double the dose.

The next day the muscles in my legs were not working and my eye was worse, plus plenty of other symptoms like excessive perspiration and heart racing.

I stopped the supplement and now, 3 weeks later, I am having palpitations and heart racing, plus uncontrolable twitching in my arms and legs and eye - the doctor says it's anxiety and wants me on valium, but it all started with this excessive magnesium dose.

I think I may be vitamin D deficient and the magnesium wiped out what was there. Previously when i've taken magnesiun I get eye twitching too. Is it likely to be vitamin D?

Just don't know for sure...

Hi Christina,

Your ND was actually right to put you on magnesium without assessing your level because, if you take a look at my page on Magnesium Levels, they are NOT accurate and, even worse, they give you a false sense of security that you are NOT deficient.

But as far as the side effects, I don't actually know what's going on. But I have been told by knowledgeable people, that people who have such severe reactions to magnesium are often the most deficient.

While it COULD be a vitamin d deficiency, a vitamin d deficiency doesn't usually cause twitching or heart palpitations- that's usually magnesium deficiency. In any case, you should have your Vitamin D Level checked to make sure.

A couple of other thoughts are that it could be:

Potassium Deficiency

or

Calcium Deficiency

both of which are responsible for muscle contraction as well. It also requires Vitamin B6 in order for you to absorb magnesium. So, it could be a combination of deficiencies. If you are not already taking a good quality multivitamin like Beyond Any Multiple which already has 100 mg of B6 in 2 daily doses, then you may want to consider that along with some GOOD QUALITY (not carbonate) calcium and some potassium to see if you can get back into some sort of balance.

Another thought that I just had is that magnesium allows you to absorb calcium, so it seems more likely to me that it is a calcium/magnesium ratio issue rather than a magnesium/vitamin D issue.

Symptoms of low calcium OFTEN has the same or similar symptoms to low magnesium (twitching, heart issues and even seizures) and they are often confused. Make sure that you get some extra calcium to see if that helps. You might even want to see if your doc will check a vitamin d level and a Blood Calcium Level to see if you can figure out what's going on...

Please read the page on heart palpitations

Please read the page on Causes of Heart Palpitations. You are almost certainly magnesium deficient EVEN IF your magnesium lab test came back normal. Please see the page on Magnesium Levels to see why that is true.

Omega 3 fatty acids also help significantly with heart palpitations. You are almost certainly deficient as well and your doctor is not going to ever test you for that. So that is why 4 doctors have not been able to help you.
