Am I taking the correct level of Vitamin D supplements?

by Maureen
(UK)

I have just had blood test results for Vitamin D levels and it shows my Vitamin D level is 11 ng/ml.

It has been recommended that I take Adcal-D3 tablets, 2 per day. I have calculated that this means I would be taking the equivalent of 800 IU's per day of vitamin D. According to this web site this is no where near enough.

I have been felt poorly for years with various aches and pains and other symptoms and have consulted various doctors both NHS and alternative therapies.

I would welcome your advice please as I don't want to waste time on not taking enough if this supplement could make me well again.

Look forward to hearing your comments

Maureen

Taking Enough Vitamin D...
by: Kerri Knox, RN-The Immune Queen!

Hi Maureen,

I hate to be the one to tell you this, but your doctor isn't giving you NEARLY enough Vitamin D. 800 IU's isn't even a good MAINTENANCE DOSE let alone enough to correct a moderate deficiency like yours.

A more 'appropriate' dose that many researchers are recommending is 50,000 IU's per week (about 7000 IU's per day- almost 10 times what you are taking) for 6 to 12 weeks, then doing another Vitamin D Blood Level to make sure that your number has improved.

Since your doctor is likely unfamiliar with appropriate Vitamin D Dosages, you'll need to talk to him about proper Vitamin D Deficiency Treatment to get your levels up higher.... AND getting on an appropriate maintenance dose. Usually between 3800 IU's to 5000 IU's if you are an average sized adult.

I hope that this helped Maureen, let me know if you have any other questions.
