Easy Solution...
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi Vicki,

Well, Some supplements are made from fish. You could call a bunch of companies and find one that is made with fish and is soy, dairy, wheat, yeast free. Good luck.

Or you could get some natural sunlight

And don't make the mistake of going to a tanning salon. Most have very high EMF levels and have been shown to be a cancer danger equivalent to smoking a pack a day of cigarettes. And the vast majority do NOT produce Vitamin D anyway because they have purposely blocked out those rays!!

So, really those are your two choices. And you'll need to have a way to get vitamin D for the rest of your life- so make sure that the supplement company that you call isn't going to go out of business in a couple of years and leave you without any source of good quality vitamin d

Hope that this helped.

Can't find Vitamin D that I can tolerate
by: Cindy

I am having a similar problem. I am also extremely deficient in Vitamin D and am hyperthyroid. I've tried the 50,000 units of Vitamin D prescribed by my Endo; couldn't take it...gave me migraines.

Thought it was because of the soy..I have problems with soy since the Graves disease. Bought D3 drops in coconut oil from the health food store; again migraines. I have been taking cod liver oil and tolerating it, but concerned about the Vitamin A.

I would be also interested in finding a Vitamin D supplement made with Fish.

It's very frustrating.

Magnesium...
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi Cindy,

It's EXTREMELY likely that it is one of two things bothering you. It is either that you are sensitive to the oil that is in the vitamin d that you are taking. The solution to this is that you can get a 'dry' (no oil) vitamin d like the Dry Vitamin D3 Supplement that I offer here.

But when someone gets migraines or headaches with vitamin d, this is almost surely a problem of you getting an induced magnesium deficiency from taking the vitamin D. Please read the page on taking Magnesium and Vitamin D together in order to avoid the side effects that you are experiencing from this.

So, please read these pages, these are NOT uncommon side effects that you are having, but they are NOT really problems of Vitamin D Side Effects at all- but side effects related to it's depletion of magnesium or an ingredient that is used to carry the vitamin d.

If you switch to a 'dry' vitamin d and you are taking magnesium as outlined on my Magnesium Dosage page and you are still having problems, then come back and let me know and we'll brainstorm some more. But I'm betting that will solve your problem.

Allergic to Vitamin D3 ???
by: Anonymous

You're probably allergic to the way most Vitamin D3 is made. Why would anyone knowingly eat something that has been irradiated like vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol)plus being from glands of animals!

WAKE UP PEOPLE!! i know of a company that makes D3 made from organic shitake mushroom and rice germs extracts. It's called (
LifeGive SUN-D )you can purchase for a very good price at the Green Wave Cafe,Plantation Florida 954-581-8377 or google LifeGive Sun-D but the best price i found was at Green Wave. I do not work or receive any money from Green Wave ! GOODLUCK!

Tried to Contact the Company...
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Hi Stan,

Thanks for the tip. I've made several attempts to contact the LifeGive company through one of their companies called AliveRaw and they have not returned my emails once I started asking about how they know that it is D3 and whether they have any proof of whether it brings up blood levels.

Here's the first email that was in response to how to reach the LifeGive company to get this information.

__________

Hello Kerri,

The LiveGive products are manufactured through Hippocrates Health Institute. Hippocrates is owned by Dr Brian Clement, who also owns
Alive Raw. I am happy to answer any questions you may have.

Tonya

_______________
Hi Tonya,

I would like to know specifically about the process how your Vitamin D3 is made, any studies done on it's efficacy and reports of any
independant labs that have verified it's contents.
Essentially what I want to know is:

1) Can you prove that it's really D3?
2) Can you prove that it brings up blood levels as effectively as vitamin d3 or that it even brings up blood levels at all?
3)Generally how it's made.

I'm not interested in any 'trade secrets' or anything like that, but I am a health practitioner and counsel hundreds of people on vitamin d and have done more research on Vitamin D than 99% of health practitioners and I would like to be able to determine if the vegan d3 is something that I would feel good promoting to my vegan clients.

And the reason I'm asking about how it's made is that MegaFood Vitamins
makes the claim that their D3 is from yeast, but they simply feed the yeast a lanolin based vitamin d and use studies from their other products to make claims that it's better assimilated and more effective than other D3's when they have no evidence of this.

Is there an affiliate program for Life Give Products if I'm convinced?

Hello Kerri,

I am waiting on the documents from Dr. Clement. I should have them for you by Monday.
Sorry for the delay, Dr. Clement is out of town.

I have since send 3 emails to Tonya with no response. So, I have to assume that LifeGive Vitamin D3 cannot prove that their product actually IS D3 at all and/or that it has not been proven to bring up blood levels of Vitamin D.

LifeGive Vitamin D
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

Until I receive documentation to show me otherwise, I will NOT recommend LiveGive vitamin D3.

And just to let you know Stan, the vitamin d3 that you make on YOUR skin in also 'irradiated' with ultraviolet rays from the glands of animals- and that is how the Vitamin D3 from Lanolin is made.

This is a natural process and sheep and dogs actually create Vitamin D3 in their fur and then lick it off when grooming- monkeys do the same thing. So, saying that it's unnatural to be ingesting irradiated Vitamin D3 from the glands of animals shows a lack of knowledge about our origins and how humans and other primates create vitamin d in the first place.

Nature designed D3 to come from animal sources, including our own bodies.

Allergic to Lanolin?
by: Chris

Kerri,

Thanks for all the good info on Vitamin D. I have a vitamin D deficiency -- the dr. said my d level was 14. I started taking D3 over the counter b/c I didn't want to take the prescription that was 50,000 IU's. I then had an allergic reaction which consisted of itching all over, tightness in chest and throat.

I'm assuming that I am allergic to the lanolin in the vitamin D. I remember not being able to wear wool as a child b/c I would itch so badly.

Can I take D2? Is it also from lanolin? Are there any good forms of D3 that are lanolin free??

Thanks so much for your help!!

Low Vitamin D
by: Cindy

I just wanted to return with a comment. I took you advice and for the first time I'm able to take Vitamin D...I do take it dry to avoid the soy with Magnesium. (I'm the earlier Cindy in this thread). I still have very low Vitamin D levels, but at least it is slowly coming up. You gave me excellent advice. I'm not sure why patients cannot get get this information from their endos. Now, If I could only find out why I am still so tired all of the time....still seeking :) I was diagnosed with Graves 2 1/2 years ago and have been in remission for quite some time. I would love to be myself again....just started HRT therapy ...I can tell it's helping...but still have extreme fatigue....baby steps I suppose.

THANK YOU FOR HELPING ME

Vitamin D from MCTs or coconut oil?
by: Christina

Hi there!

I found a vitamin D3 from NOW foods which says that the "ingredients list" is MCTs... I know that I'm allergic to coconut oil which I assume is a major source of MCTs... (I tend to get uveitic flares)... So, I'm afraid to take the MCTs in case I'm allergic to this as well (I'm allergic to a lot of things) and I'm reluctantly buying a lanolin based product instead... Is it realistic to believe one can be allergic to MCTs?

Christina.

MCT's are from coconut oil
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen

Yes, Most MCT's are from coconut oil. I have no idea if it's 'realistic' whether you would be allergic to refined MCT's or not.

If you're concerned about it, then don't use MCT's. But unless you are allergic to lanolin, I'm not sure why you are concerned about taking the lanolin and I'm not sure what you mean by 'getting a lanolin based product instead'. The vitamin d doesn't come from MCT's, it's only a carrier. The NOW Foods vitamin D that you have is almost sure to be lanolin based- but in a CARRIER of MCT's.

Burning sensation on tongue and nausea after taking D3
by: Mara

Hi Kerry,

I've been reading a few threads about vitamin D on your site and am glad that this information is available. However, I also have a question about allergies to D3.

I just started taking 2,000 IU daily of a dry D3 vitmin from a company called Metabolic Maintenance, and noticed a difference in the way I feel - both good and bad. They make a dry formula - which is all I can take since I have multiple food allergies.

I've been on this supplement for 4 days and noticed on the third day that my tongue felt like it got burned (same feeling as when you drink something really hot and scorch your tongue.) AND I also felt nauseous right after taking the vitamin - no vomiting or anything like that, just nausea.

Do you know if this is a common symptom of taking Vitamin D?

Thank you so much.

Scorched tongue
by: Kerri Knox, RN- The Immune Queen!

The nausea is easy, just make sure that you take your supplement with food- particularly a meal that has some fat in it- and move it to the evening meal instead of the morning. That will almost surely fix that problem.

As far as the 'scorched tongue' that is often due to a B vitamin deficiency. MAYBE your vitamin D supplement is 'bringing out' some of your other deficiencies, which is why I ALWAYS recommend taking vitamin d with a HIGH quality multivitamin and mineral supplement such as Beyond Any Multiple.

The 'scorched tongue' feeling is also called Begign Migratory Glossitis and can also be related to Gluten Sensitivity and/or possible other food allergies. Again, why this is happening when you started taking the vitamin d, I don't know. Maybe it's coincidence or maybe it's that you are actually suffering from many more vitamin deficiencies and/or food sensitivities than you realize...

D3 from Algae
by: Alex

The D3 in Nature's Plus 1000IU Vitamin D3 Soft Gels is derived from algae and does not cause me a problem. I am allergic to lanolin (Life Extension Vitamin D3 gave me terrible headaches) and gluten intolerant. Hope this helps. Nature's Plus definitely works as confirmed by recent blood tests.

[Kerri's note: 1000 IU tabs are virtually worthless. You'll be needing to take approximately 5 tablets per day to meet the basic daily requirements for the average person].

Also allergic to Lanolin and Lamb
by: Monta

I am so excited to have found this blog and thread!
i have always been allergic to wool and to lanolin in lotions-- so was my grandfather. The meat always made my mouth itch but we didnt eat it often growing up. Then i spent several years in Turkey, where lamb is a staple, and I became extremely allergic to the meat, getting severe asthma from eating it or even being near it while cooking if it was being broiled and getting into the air. I've had asthma for 34 years and used inhalers daily all that time. I only made the vitamin D connection recently, but after stopping all vitamin D milk, calcium supplements and vitamins with lanolin based D, I am now going on one month without any inhalers or asthma symptoms.

im now taking Nordic Naturals Vegan D3 drops-- the one made from lichen. i also get a good amount of sun, living in San Diego. Sorry-- dont know what my levels are.

My solution to Vit D3 Allergy
by: Jim

Here's my solution to a severe allergy to Vitamin D3 derived from Lanolin (the form of the Vitamin available in most all supplements sold today)

Vitamin D Vegan Nordic Naturals 1 fl oz Liquid

And blood test (performed by my Nephrologist) show that that this Vegan version of D3 is equally effective in raising my level of Vitamin D3 as would be expected from the Lanolin version.

allergies
by: Brenda

I have been taking 2000 units a day for six months. I have been having terrible allergic reactions to it. I can't eat cheese anymore. It messed up my system.

Do some research on magnesium. It's the most important mineral in our bodies. D3 consumes your magnesium and can make you sick if you don't supplement with extra magnesium. If you use enough magnesium, you don't have to use D3.

Vitamin D From Lichen
by: jane d.

I have been taking Vitamin D Made From Lichen for quite a while along with jarrow formulas K2 mk-7 and it seems to be working great I also have wool and lanolin allergies that is why I search for this type of supplement if you check out dr. Mercola website he has some videos discussing the importance of taking the K2 mk-7 with your D3 so that the calcium in your blood will be deposited into your bones and not into your arteries causing arteriosclerosis

Allergy to lanolin

For years I couldn't tolerate vitamin d3, however I found Vitamin D Made From Lichen and I don't have any bad effects!

Vitamin D3 without lanolin or soy
by: Shannon

Hello,

I understand your frustration. It was extremely difficult finding a D3 suppliment that was safe for my daughter with a lanolin allergy and a soy allergy. I spent hours looking for one. I found Vitamin D Made From Lichen. She has been taking it for years.I hope this helps.

Cod Liver Oil & Vitamin D3
by: Isabella

Hello,

I'm so glad I found this blog. I've had a time with being allergic to Vit D3. Have been allergic to wool since I was a child and have very low Vit D levels and have rheumatoid arthritis and joint deterioration in my hands & feet. Dr put me on prescription Vit D and it made me hurt all over my body to the point I could hardly move. Dr. wants me on the Prolia shots but I read horrible side effects about that as well so now just try to eat the foods daily that helps RA but still need Vit D desperately. I was wanting to know if cod liver oil will do as much for the body as Vit D3 or what would you suggest?
Thank you,
Isabella

No, I don't recommend cod liver oil
by: Kerri Knox

Cod liver oil is not a good choice for a vitamin D supplement as you will overdose on Vitamin A before getting enough Vitamin D. Yes, most Vitamin D supplements are derived from lanolin. You can use a Lanolin Free Vitamin D Supplement to avoid any future problems.
