What is Seasonal Affective Disorder?SAD is not just experiencing sadness after summer has gone. Symptoms of SAD start to develop in autumn, when the season moves toward winter and daylight hours are shortened. For most people, symptoms of SAD typically appear sometime between September and November. Moreover, because of the severity and consequences of Seasonal Affective Disorder and other types of depression, doctors need extensive evidence of the condition before they are willing to make a definite diagnosis. Although symptoms may be very severe, doctors do not usually diagnose a person with SAD until after he or she demonstrates strong evidence of the disorder for at least three winters in a row!
What are the Symptoms of SAD?Individuals who are affected by Seasonal Affective Disorder begin to have emotions of depression, reduced motivation, and tend to sleep for excessive periods. Furthermore, they develop a craving for sugar or sweets. In addition, most people diagnosed with Seasonal Affective Disorder also have poor
Immune System Functioning. Often, they become ill much more easily than people who Symptoms of SAD can seriously decrease a person's ability to function at work or educationally. This decreased motivation often makes getting out of bed or engaging in one’s usual daily activities difficult. Sufferers have trouble participating in social situations, or even at home. These persons often have episodes of extreme panic and irritability. Occasionally, the problem becomes severe and disabling enough that people even consider suicide and have to be hospitalized for treatment! Additionally, this condition seems to get better yearly at springtime. In fact, by March or April, symptoms of SAD typically subside or resolve altogether - until the following autumn.
This is true even in regions that tend to be dismal all year long. In fact, as many as twenty percent of the people treated for seasonal affective disorder will at some point develop symptoms of bipolar disorder!
These sufferers primarily tend to be depressed in the winter months, but have normal moods during the remainder of the year. In some cases, however, they describe instances of uncontrollable mood elevation, which is also called mania.
As with other types of depression, symptoms of SAD may become very serious and even disabling if left untreated. Additionally, some people experience very mild forms of depression; they may experience sleepiness, lack of motivation, and eating difficulties. Such people, however, do not usually endure instances of depressive moods or anxiety.
Who Gets Symptoms of SADThis type of depression is relatively uncommon in sunny regions such as Tennessee, southern California, and Texas. In contrast, people who reside in states with a large number of cloudy days, such as Ohio, Michigan, or Oregon are at higher risk for developing SAD. Residents of countries such as Denmark, Sweden, and Ireland also struggle with Seasonal Affective Disorder.Interestingly, females appear to experience symptoms of SAD more frequently than men do.
Treatment options for Symptoms of SADScientists have tried a number of different strategies to help affected individuals overcome this debilitating problem. They have tried exposing people to artificial light in an attempt to help them manufacture more serotonin and reduce depression symptoms.
